Spiritus®
Foundational Practice
Embodied Trance™ is a movement-based expanded states practice developed by Stephenie Purnell that integrates elements of Trance Movement™, nervous system awareness, evocative music, emotional processing, embodied exploration, and integration practices in support of self-inquiry, creativity, healing, and transformation.
The human organism is rhythmic by nature.
Breath, heartbeat, emotion, memory, and nervous system activity all move in patterns of rhythm and flow. Music and movement engage the body directly, often accessing layers of experience that exist beyond language or analytical thought.
Neuroscience demonstrates that rhythm activates not only the auditory system, but also regions of the brain associated with movement, emotion, memory, and sensory integration. As rhythmic engagement deepens, the nervous system can settle into expanded states associated with creativity, emotional release, heightened awareness, and altered perception.
Across cultures and throughout history, rhythmic movement practices have served as gateways into expanded states of consciousness, ritual, creativity, insight, and communal healing.
Embodied Trance™ draws from this lineage while offering a contemporary, carefully facilitated experience grounded in psychological safety, individual sovereignty, and embodied awareness.
Embodied Trance™ utilizes evocative music, rhythmic movement, breath awareness, sensory refinement, and expanded states facilitation to support deep internal exploration through the body.
Experiences often begin with guided practices designed to awaken breath, expression, resonance, and embodied presence. Sound becomes an entry point, helping participants soften inhibition, regulate the nervous system, and transition more fully into the body before movement begins.
Participants are then guided inward through blindfolded or inward-focused movement practices in which the social dynamic of watching and being watched is eliminated.
There is no choreography to learn and no performance to achieve.
The body becomes the guide.
As movement unfolds, individuals often experience emotional release, creative insight, expanded awareness, nervous system regulation, heightened presence, and a deeper sense of connection to themselves and their internal experience.
Each session is unique and may include movement exploration, breath awareness, music immersion, reflection, restorative grounding practices, and post-experience integration.
At Spiritus8®, Embodied Trance™ is facilitated within thoughtfully curated environments designed to support safety, discretion, emotional integrity, comfort, and meaningful self-exploration.
The practice emphasizes:
Inspired in part by years of experience with Trance Movement™, Embodied Trance™ expands the work beyond movement alone — integrating embodiment, nervous system regulation, reflection, and post-experience integration into a more comprehensive transformational practice.
The result is an immersive experience that supports insight, expression, restoration, creativity, and personal transformation through the intelligence of the body itself.
